Free Online Classes for Curious Minds: Where to Start

Curious about astronomy, history or finally understanding that spreadsheet program? Learning something new can be a real pleasure at any age. You don’t need to enroll anywhere or spend a dime. Several well-known, respected sites offer free lessons you can take at your own pace, from your couch.

Three Free Places to Start

MIT OpenCourseWare

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology shares materials from more than 2,500 of its courses for free, including lecture notes, readings and many videos. There are no start dates and no account needed. It does not offer credit or certificates, which also means there are no tests unless you want them.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free education to anyone, anywhere. It is popular with students, but its lessons in math, science, economics, history and life skills work just as well for adults brushing up or learning something new. It is also a nice way to help grandchildren with homework.

LearnFree

LearnFree offers free, self-paced lessons on everyday computer skills, including using the internet, email and Microsoft Office programs like Word and Excel. It is a good fit if you want to feel more comfortable with technology.

Tips for Getting Started

  1. Pick one subject that truly interests you, not one you think you “should” learn.
  2. Set aside a small, regular time, such as 20 minutes after breakfast.
  3. Turn on captions in videos if that helps, and pause as often as you like.
  4. Invite a friend to take the same course so you can talk about it together.

A quick safety note: real free courses never need your bank details or Social Security number. If a site asks you to pay up front for a “free” class or pressures you to buy something, close the page.

If you enjoy learning with other people in a real classroom, Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes offer classes made for adults who simply love to learn.
