Join the Christmas Bird Count: A Free Winter Activity for Beginners

Looking for a gentle reason to get outside this winter? The Christmas Bird Count, run by the National Audubon Society, welcomes people of any skill level. You can join from a walking path, a park, or even a window at home.

What It Is

According to Audubon, the count takes place between December 14 and January 5 each year. Volunteers count the birds they see in a local area, and the counts are free to join. Audubon says all skill levels are welcome, and beginners are encouraged to ask questions.

Two Easy Ways to Take Part

  • Feeder count. If you live inside a count circle, you can watch a bird feeder at home or in a local park. Audubon says no binoculars or hiking are needed.
  • Field count. You survey an area during daylight hours, alone or with a group. Audubon’s guide says new birders are usually paired with an experienced one.

How to Join

  1. Go to Audubon’s Circle Finder at cbc.audubon.org/en/join and look for a count near you.
  2. Register through the finder and follow the organizer’s directions.
  3. Ask about anything you need, such as an easier route or a shorter shift.

Audubon suggests bringing water, snacks, and anything that helps you count, such as binoculars or a field guide. Many counts have items you can borrow.

Stay Comfortable and Safe

Dress in warm layers, with a hat and gloves, and wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Icy paths can be slippery, so take your time and consider walking poles. Bring a charged phone, and let someone know where you will be. A feeder count from a warm window is a fine choice too.
