TSA PreCheck: Cost, How to Apply and Whether It’s Worth It

If airport lines make you tense, TSA PreCheck may help. It is a paid program from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that offers a faster screening lane at many U.S. airports. It is not for everyone, so here is how it works, what it costs and how to decide.

What PreCheck Does

Members can usually keep their shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops and liquids in their bags. TSA says about 99 percent of members wait less than 10 minutes. TSA is also clear that no traveler is guaranteed expedited screening, and PreCheck must appear on your boarding pass.

What It Costs (as of October 2026)

A membership lasts five years. TSA lists the enrollment fee as $77.95 to $85, depending on the company you enroll with (IDEMIA, Telos or CLEAR). Renewal runs about $68.95 to $78. Check the current price on tsa.gov/precheck before you pay.

How to Apply

  1. Start on the official TSA PreCheck page and choose an enrollment provider. The online part can take as little as 5 minutes.
  2. Visit an enrollment center. The visit takes about 10 minutes and includes fingerprints, a photo, document checks and payment.
  3. Bring identification and proof of citizenship or immigration status. Your name must match the one you use on airline reservations. Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents can apply.
  4. After approval, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Add it to each airline reservation, or save it in your frequent flyer profile.

Is It Worth It for You?

It may be if you fly a few times a year. If you fly rarely, regular screening may be fine. Ordinary screening also has help available. See our guides to airport security with medications and medical devices and wheelchair assistance.

Watch Out for Look-Alike Websites

Only apply through the official TSA site. TSA says it will not reimburse people who enrolled through a fraudulent website. If that happens, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call your bank or card issuer.
