Shingles and Pneumonia Shots After 50: What Medicare Covers

Many people get a flu shot every fall and stop there. Two other vaccines are worth a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist once you reach 50: the shingles vaccine and the pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine. Here is what the CDC recommends and what Medicare says about coverage, as of October 2026.

The Shingles Vaccine

The CDC recommends the shingles vaccine, called Shingrix, for adults 50 and older. It says there is no maximum age. It is given in two doses, usually 2 to 6 months apart. Common side effects include a sore arm, tiredness, muscle aches and headache, usually lasting 2 to 3 days. The CDC advises getting the second dose even if you had a reaction to the first.

Medicare.gov says shingles vaccines are covered by Part D, Medicare drug coverage, and that you pay nothing if you have Part D. Without a Part D plan, you may pay the full cost, so check your coverage first.

The Pneumococcal Vaccine

The CDC recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all adults 50 and older. Which vaccine is right for you depends on your health and history, so ask your provider. Medicare.gov says Part B covers pneumococcal shots, and you pay nothing if your provider accepts assignment.

Simple Steps Before You Go

  1. Check your records or ask your doctor which vaccines you have already had.
  2. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which of these vaccines fit you.
  3. Call your pharmacy or doctor’s office and ask whether your plan covers the shot there, so there are no surprise bills.
  4. Bring your Medicare card and any drug plan card.
  5. Tell the provider if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine.

The CDC says a mild illness like a cold is not a reason to delay, but you should wait until you recover from a moderate or severe illness. You can read about the flu, COVID-19 and RSV shots in our guide below.
